EastCastle

February 28, 2007

The EastCastle session had a rough start.  The staff thought we were supposed to be coming on Thursdays rather than Tuesdays so they were unprepared for us and had to scramble to get a group together.  As a whole our group was pretty nervous but as the storytelling began we all started to get the hang of it.  Although their were some residents who were unwilling to participate, we were able to facilitate two very interesting stories.  The residents who did participate seemed to enjoy the activity.  I think as a group however, we need to be careful not to slip into yes/no questions.  Also I think we all need to be careful to ask only one question at a time.  Lastly, I think some of us need to sit with the residents rather than having us all standing so it seems less intimidating.  Over all I think we did pretty well for our first time.  We will get better at this each week and EastCastle will be expecting us on Tuesdays not Thursdays.

St Ann’s 2/27/07

I felt we did great as a team . When there was a lull in the storytelling everyone helped out. Our story consisted of a lot of laughter and smiles.  It went like this there were two women who were playing pool and drinking whatever they could get their hands on.  They were waiting on their boyfriends because their husbands never showed up.  The story seemed to flow very well.  One thing that we need to do next week is address the statments from each person as we are reading the story and ask the person in charge to get nametags for the residents to help us get to know them and i feel we also should wear them so they know who we are too.  One thing that really bothered me was that we were missing over half our team at 2:15 that means we left the residents waiting for 15 minutes lets be professional we are students representing UWM.

St. John’s

The storytelling session went pretty well today. Father Culver was a source of comic relief when we faced difficulties. Jean was as headstrong as ever, insisting that nothing could possibly be wrong if the woman in the picture had such a beautiful dress and such beautiful legs. Donna must have really lost it–she was persistantly saying that I was handsome and would not hear otherwise. Mike did an excellent job moderating and was very personable. Like last time, the staff at St. John’s was very welcoming.

St. Ann’s 2/27

February 27, 2007

Everyone made it, although we started a little bit late, I think.  We used the photo of two older women playing pool for our story.  It was a very lively story which included all sorts of drinking and multiple boyfriends and husbands.  I liked all the story ideas that everyone contributed, but I think the room was clearly divided into the people who contributed lots of ideas and the people who didn’t say much, even though we sat next to them.  I think it will be easier for us if we all know what picture we’ll be using before we arrive onsite.  Also, I noticed that almost no one had a nametag – both storytellers and facilitators.  I felt terrible that I didn’t know their names, even though we all had gone around the room and introduced ourselves.  But there was a lot of laughter, and it seemed like everyone had a really good time.  We forgot to recap last week’s story before starting the new one, so we did it afterwards.  No one seemed to notice or mind it being out of order – they enjoyed hearing both.
